What is a tradition? If it is thrust upon you unwillingly, does that make something a tradition? So last year for my birthday, Aaron and I went with Aaron's brother and sister-n-law for dinner. We went to a Mexican restaurant, and along with the free birthday dessert, I had a large sombrero thrust on my head and a rousing song (and as an extra bonus, the waiter took the spoon and put a dot of whipped cream on my nose). Now when your daughter is in the hospital and you're under a lot of stress, this is not funny. And in fact, it made me pretty angry.
So now this year for my birthday, we grabbed dinner with another couple at another Mexican restaurant (the first 2 restaurants we planned on are closed on Monday nights). So Aaron mentioned my birthday, and I remembered this sombrero story from last year which we retold to our friends. Now I couldn't see it coming, and my friend tried to quickly tell them "no hat." But again, I had a huge pink hat placed on my head (fortunately minus the whipped cream). So the moral of the story, no more Mexican restaurants on my birthday.
The other humorous story from the week: You know how you put something somewhere, and you get used to it being there and then don't notice it anymore? Someone gave Aaron and I an old roll-top desk which we had 90% painted and almost ready to put in the house. We had it sitting in the garage behind the truck, which for a time wasn't working well. (you can see where this is headed). Aaron moved the desk to take the truck to get fixed, but while in a hurry yesterday, forgot to move the desk. First he double-checked the parking break and then tried again. So it got knocked over and pushed back a bit. So now the top doesn't "roll" too well. We'll see if it can be rescued :).
So if you're trying to keep up with the Joneses, you need to wear a sombrero and run over some furniture! Have fun!
